Funding For Urban, Rural, And Northern Indigenous Housing
NICHI was formed in November 2022 by Indigenous housing providers across the country to deliver For Indigenous, by Indigenous housing solutions for urban, rural, and northern Indigenous Peoples. We prioritize housing as a human right, with a goal to achieve a national Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy that is fully Indigenous led.

Allocation Of Funds
The National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Inc. (NICHI) will provide financial resources to support “For Indigenous, by Indigenous” (FIBI) housing solutions for urban, rural, and northern Indigenous Peoples.
NICHI is prioritizing housing as a human right and has set a goal to achieve a national urban, rural and northern (URN) Indigenous Housing Strategy that is not only fully Indigenous led but advocates holistic, serviced-based community housing that empowers Indigenous communities.
The 281.5 million is to address the critical need for safe, adequate and affordable urban, rural and northern Indigenous housing projects across Canada. This application process will look to identify and select projects that address in a fair and equitable way the urgent and unmet housing needs of Indigenous Peoples living away from their home community.
Funding
- Capacity & Organizational Development: Up to $1 million targeted to project development, on the ground assistance, operational shortfalls and other project development requirements such as modernization and improvement needed to ensure project success/continuity.
- Capital Development: Project Funding requirements in excess of $1 million up to $10 million needed to bridge or leverage funding for large scale projects, undertake major renovations, new builds or other similar major capital requirements.
Eligibility Criteria
This fund is available to organizations working in the community housing sector across Canada:
- Indigenous-led organizations in urban, rural and northern areas of Canada. We define Indigenous-led organizations as:
- Board and Executive leadership is over 50% Indigenous.
- Organization serves one or all of the three distinct Indigenous populations in your community or region, i.e. First Nation, Inuit or Métis.
- Non-profit
- Expressed ability by the Organization to address urgent and unmet need.
Who provide at least one of the following:
- Supportive Services
- Transitional/ Supportive Housing
- Non-market Housing
- Affordable Housing

- Provide relevant information and updates to those who have subscribed to the list of supporters of NICHI,

- Conduct aggregate research on trends, issues and challenges and report findings,
- Organize conferences, programs or events related to non-profit housing and homelessness,
- Authenticate NICHI members for member-only communications, and
- Meet legal and regulatory inquiries.
How NICHI Protects Your Personal Information
NICHI only collects, uses and discloses Personal Information for purposes directly related to our membership, newsletter, and wider sector support signups.
Use of the information is limited to the purposes described in the Policy and NICHI does not otherwise sell, trade, exchange or disclose any Personal Information it has obtained.
NICHI endeavors to ensure your Personal Information is as accurate, current and complete as necessary for the purposes for which we use that information.
NICHI keeps your Personal Information only as long as it is required for the reasons it was collected, after which we have procedures to destroy or delete it.
NICHI maintains appropriate physical, procedural and technical security with respect to its information storage to prevent any loss, misuse or unauthorized access to Personal Information.

Support For Those In Greatest Need
In Budget 2022, the Government of Canada committed 4.3 billion dollars to support housing. From the 300 million dollars to launch an Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy, the federal government announced 281.5 million dollars for NICHI to address the critical need for safe and affordable Indigenous housing. Of 677,000 Indigenous households in urban, rural, and northern areas, 124,000 are in core housing need, including 37,500 individuals experiencing homelessness. This funding is intended for those who have identified the most need.

FIBI Approach To Funding
A For Indigenous, by Indigenous approach re-engineers a funding system that was designed for Indigenous Peoples by government and left many unserved and without cultural supports. It prioritizes the needs of Indigenous organizations to deliver an objective, fair, and equitable process that reaches housing providers regardless of size, capacity, and geographic location.

Two Funding Streams
Capacity and Organizational Development provides up to 1 million dollars for project development, on the ground assistance, operational support, and improvements that ensure project success. Capital Development provides funding in excess of 1 million up to 10 million dollars to leverage large scale projects, major renovations, and new builds.
